PE and Sport Premium
At St. Joseph’s school, we recognise the benefits of a strong Physical Education (PE) Curriculum and extra-curricular activities on developing a healthy body, improving academic performance, improved social skill and the raising of self-esteem.
At least two hour sessions per week are dedicated to physical activity in the curriculum. The high profile of PE at St. Joseph's is reflected in the children’s attendance at the extended school sports activities as well as the achievement of the children at organised inter-school competitions.
In April 2013, the Government announced funding (Sport Premium) for physical education and sport to improve the quality and breadth of PE and sport provision in schools. We must use this funding to make additional and sustainable improvements to the quality of PE and sport we offer.
This means that we use the premium to:
- develop or add to the PE and sport activities that we already offer
- build capacity and capability within our school to ensure that improvements made now will benefit pupils joining the school in future years.
A detailed report on Sports Premium can be found HERE. This report shows:
- how much funding received
- a full breakdown of how the funding has been spent
- the effect of the premium on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment
- these improvements are sustainable
As recommended by the Department for Education, we have reflected on the impact of our current provision and reviewed the previous spend. We are required to publish details of how we spent this funding as well as on the impact it has had on pupils’ PE and sport participation and attainment by the end of the summer term or by 31st July at the latest.
Key Stage 1 PE
During Key Stage 1 pupils should develop fundamental movement skills, become increasingly competent and confident and access a broad range of opportunities to extend their agility, balance and coordination, individually and with others. They should be able to engage in competitive (both against self and against others) and co-operative physical activities, in a range of increasingly challenging situations.
Pupils should be taught to:
- movements including running, jumping, throwing and catching, as well as developing balance, agility and co-ordination, and begin to apply these in a range of activities
- participate in team games, developing simple tactics for attacking and defending
- perform dances using simple movement patterns
Key Stage 2 PE
Pupils should continue to apply and develop a broader range of skills, learning how to use them in different ways and to link them to make actions and sequences of movement. They should enjoy communicating, collaborating and competing with each other. They should develop an understanding of how to improve in different physical activities and sports and learn how to evaluate and recognise their own success.
Pupils should be taught to:
- use running, jumping, throwing and catching in isolation and in combination
- play competitive games, modified where appropriate [for example, badminton, basketball, cricket, football, hockey, netball, rounders and tennis], and apply basic principles suitable for attacking and defending
- develop flexibility, strength, technique, control and balance [for example, through athletics and gymnastics]
- perform dances using a range of movement patterns
- take part in outdoor and adventurous activity challenges both individually and within a team
- compare their performances with previous ones and demonstrate improvement to achieve their personal best
Swimming activities and water safety
All schools must provide swimming instruction either in key stage 1 or key stage 2.
In particular, pupils should be taught to:
- swim competently, confidently and proficiently over a distance of at least 25 metres
- use a range of strokes effectively [for example, front crawl, backstroke and breaststroke]
- perform safe self-rescue in different water-based situations
Health and safety note
The general teaching requirement for health and safety applies in this subject.
